8 killed, 32 injured as pickup hits dumper in MP's Bhind; UP CM announces aid
At least eight labourers were killed and 32 others injured in a road accident in Madhya Pradesh's Bhind district on Tuesday (August 18, 2026), police said.
The accident occurred around 1 a.m. near Chhimka village on the Bhind-Gwalior National Highway when a pickup vehicle carrying the labourers collided head-on with a dumper truck.
The labourers, all residents of Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri district, were returning to their villages after completing paddy transplantation work in Gwalior. They had been away from home for several weeks, according to police.
Preliminary investigations suggested that the driver of the labourers' vehicle lost control while trying to avoid cattle sitting on the highway, said Ramnaresh Yadav, station house officer of Gohad Chauraha police station. The vehicle veered into the wrong direction and collided with the dumper coming from the opposite side, he added.
The impact badly damaged the pickup, trapping several labourers inside, Yadav said. Some of the trapped workers had to be freed by police and local residents.
Eight labourers were killed in the accident. Five of them died on the spot, while three succumbed to injuries while being taken to a hospital. Thirty-two others were injured, the officer said.
Police rushed to the spot after being alerted and, with the help of local residents, rescued the workers trapped inside the vehicle. The injured were taken to a hospital in Gohad for first aid, and those seriously injured were referred to Gwalior for further treatment.
Kheri Superintendent of Police Khyati Garg confirmed the eight deaths and expressed grief over the accident. Six of the deceased have been identified as Updesh, Amar Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajneesh — all residents of Bela Tursiya village in the Mohammadi area, aged between 30 and 45 years — along with Subhash, 30, of Harna Neoli village, and Guddu, 45, of Kishanpur Ajit village in the Pasgawan area. The identities of the two other deceased are yet to be established.
Umesh Chaurasiya, station house officer of Mohammadi police station, said family members of some of the deceased and injured have reached the accident spot.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the accident and announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased. In a post on X, he said, "The loss of lives in the unfortunate accident in Bhind, Madhya Pradesh, is deeply distressing and heart-wrenching. My condolences are with the bereaved families."
He said officials have been directed to coordinate with the Madhya Pradesh government to ensure the mortal remains of the Uttar Pradesh residents killed in the accident are transported to their home districts and handed over to their families, besides arranging proper medical treatment for the injured. "Instructions have been issued to provide financial assistance of ₹2 lakh to the family of each deceased person from Uttar Pradesh," the Chief Minister said.
The accident highlights the precarious travel conditions often faced by seasonal migrant workers in India, who frequently rely on pickup trucks for overnight journeys. Such vehicles are not designed for passenger transport, and overloading is common, though it is not yet confirmed whether the pickup was overloaded in this incident.
Further investigation into the cause of the accident is underway, police said.
