Oracle Workforce Drops by 21,000 Amid Restructuring and AI Shift
Oracle's total workforce decreased by approximately 21,000 employees in fiscal year 2026, a 13 per cent reduction, as the company continues restructuring operations driven partly by increased adoption of artificial intelligence and investments in cloud infrastructure.
As of May 31, 2026, the company employed 141,000 people, down from about 162,000 a year earlier, according to its annual report released on Monday.
The report detailed that Oracle spent $1.84 billion on severance payments and other exit costs related to restructuring in fiscal 2026, a significant rise from $374 million in the previous fiscal year.
In its filing, Oracle stated that the workforce adjustments were in response to several factors, including management and product changes, performance issues, strategic shifts, and acquisitions. The company did not specify the exact number of layoffs attributed to AI adoption versus other factors.
The restructuring reflects broader trends in the technology industry, where companies are reallocating resources toward AI and cloud services while reducing headcount in other areas. Oracle has been expanding its cloud infrastructure and AI capabilities to compete with rivals such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.
