Opposition leaders demand independent probe into Ram temple donation theft, question PM's silence
In a joint letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday demanded an independent investigation into the alleged theft of donations meant for the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The letter, sent ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament, stated that the Prime Minister's 'silence' on the matter 'is unacceptable' and called for accountability and restitution.
According to official sources, eight individuals have been arrested so far in connection with the theft. The investigation has now been expanded to scrutinise around 30 more employees who were involved in counting cash offerings at the temple. Many of these employees are alleged to have been hired on the recommendations of functionaries of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust or their associates.
In their letter, Gandhi and Kharge wrote, 'You are aware of the theft of thousands of crores in the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. Lakhs of devotees who donated their hard-earned money with faith, devotion and trust are feeling betrayed by the theft.' They urged the Prime Minister to ensure a thorough and independent probe to restore public faith.
The Trust, which oversees the construction of the Ram temple, has not yet issued an official statement on the allegations. The case is being investigated by the Uttar Pradesh Police. The opposition leaders have called for a probe by a central agency to ensure impartiality.
The monsoon session of Parliament is set to begin on Monday, and the issue is expected to be raised by opposition members.
