OpenAI cuts Luna, Terra AI model prices by up to 80% as competition grows

OpenAI has announced significant price reductions for two of its artificial intelligence models, Luna and Terra, in a move that reflects intensifying competition and growing demand from businesses for more affordable AI services.

The ChatGPT developer lowered the cost of its smaller GPT-5.6 Luna model by 80 per cent and its mid-tier Terra model by 20 per cent. The price of its largest and flagship model, Sol, remains unchanged.

The cuts come as businesses, facing hefty AI bills, increasingly scrutinise the cost of adopting the technology. Several technology executives have noted in recent months that cheaper AI options are key to enabling widespread adoption across industries.

The pricing adjustments also follow the emergence of lower-cost Chinese AI models, which has put pressure on American laboratories to rethink their pricing strategies. By reducing prices for its smaller and mid-tier offerings, OpenAI aims to retain customers who may otherwise turn to more budget-friendly alternatives.

Industry analysts say the move could further intensify competition in the AI market, as rival firms may feel compelled to adjust their own pricing models to stay competitive. The unchanged price of the flagship Sol model suggests OpenAI is focusing its discounting on entry-level and mid-range products, which are typically more price-sensitive.

For businesses, the price cuts could lower the barrier to integrating AI tools into their operations, particularly for smaller companies that have been hesitant due to cost concerns. While the long-term impact on the industry remains to be seen, the move signals a shift towards more cost-conscious AI development and deployment.

The announcement is part of a broader trend among AI providers to make their services more accessible, as both enterprises and consumers weigh the benefits of AI against its financial and environmental costs. OpenAI's decision to cut prices on these models is expected to be watched closely by competitors and customers alike.
