OpenAI Appoints Uber Veteran Prabhjeet Singh as India Managing Director
OpenAI has named Prabhjeet Singh as its Managing Director for India, marking a significant expansion of the company's leadership in one of the fastest-growing artificial intelligence markets. Singh, a veteran of Uber's India and South Asia operations, will oversee the company's strategy in the country, including consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, and regulatory engagement.
Singh, an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad, spent 11 years at Uber, serving as President for India and South Asia from 2020 onwards. He led the ride-hailing platform's expansion across India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, managing operations in over 125 cities. His appointment at OpenAI comes as the company deepens its investments in India, where it opened its first office in New Delhi in November 2025.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has repeatedly highlighted India's importance, praising its rapid AI adoption and commitment to investing across the technology stack. At the AI Summit in February 2025, Altman said, "What's happening in India with AI is really quite amazing," and predicted an AI-driven entrepreneurial boom in the country.
Singh will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific, and is expected to join OpenAI in September 2025. His focus will include building partnerships with enterprises, developers, and government bodies to promote AI adoption. OpenAI said Singh will be its "most senior leader" in India, responsible for driving the company's growth and engagement with policymakers.
Uber confirmed Singh's departure on Friday, thanking him for his decade-long contribution and reaffirming its commitment to India. The company recently announced plans to establish its first Indian data centre in partnership with the Adani Group.
Singh's move reflects a broader trend of global AI companies investing in India, drawn by its large developer base, growing user adoption, and rising enterprise demand for AI solutions. Experts believe his experience in scaling technology businesses will be crucial for OpenAI's expansion in the market.
