One arrested after vehicle breaches police checkpoint in J&K's Ramban
The Jammu & Kashmir Police on Friday (August 7, 2026) arrested one person after a car jumped a police checkpoint in the Chanderkote area of Ramban district. The incident occurred during a routine security check along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.
A police officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that a black Scorpio was signalled to stop at the checkpoint, but the driver and his companions instead accelerated. “A constable, after gauging the situation, fired three rounds of warning shot,” the officer said. No injuries from the firing have been reported.
The vehicle was later found abandoned nearby, and one suspect, identified as Altaf Muhammad, a resident of Udhampur, was taken into custody. Police said forensic evidence was collected from the vehicle for further investigation.
Authorities have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 109 (attempt to murder) and Section 132 (assault to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the newly implemented criminal code. The investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being made to identify and trace the other occupants of the vehicle.
Ramban district, through which the highway passes, is a strategically sensitive area, and security forces routinely operate checkpoints to monitor vehicular movement. Incidents of vehicles breaching these checks are uncommon but not unprecedented. While the police have not disclosed the reason for the attempted evasion, officials stated that the evidence collected will determine the motive and possible links, if any, to unlawful activities.
The arrested individual is being questioned, and his background is being verified. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional arrests as the investigation progresses.
Local residents have been advised to cooperate with security checkpoints and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station. The situation in the area remains calm, and traffic movement has not been affected.
