Obamas inaugurate presidential centre in Chicago
Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama hosted the opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Centre in Chicago on Tuesday. The centre, located in the South Side neighbourhood of Jackson Park, is designed to serve as a museum, library, and community space.
During the ceremony, Mr. Obama said, “For me, this centre could not be any place else. It’s an expression of thanks, an acknowledgement that so much of what I hold most dear I owe to the people of this city and the people of these surrounding neighbourhoods.” The event was attended by several notable figures, including former Vice President Joe Biden, actor Tom Hanks, and singer Beyoncé.
The centre, which cost over $800 million to build, includes a museum with exhibits on Mr. Obama’s presidency, a library housing his archives, and a public garden. It is expected to attract millions of visitors annually and serve as a hub for community programmes.
Critics have raised concerns about the centre’s impact on local traffic and displacement of residents, but supporters argue it will bring economic benefits to the area. The opening marks a milestone for the Obama family, who have maintained strong ties to Chicago since Mr. Obama began his political career there.
