NTA Overhauls Staff: 47 Officials Removed, 4 GMs and 16 Young Professionals to Be Hired

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has undertaken a major administrative restructuring, sacking 47 officials and announcing plans to hire 4 General Managers (GMs) and 16 young professionals. The move is part of a broader rejig aimed at improving efficiency and transparency in the agency's operations.

According to an official order, the NTA has terminated the services of 47 contractual employees across various levels. The agency will now recruit four GMs to oversee key divisions and 16 young professionals on a contractual basis to bring in fresh expertise. The new hires are expected to streamline the conduct of entrance examinations such as NEET, JEE, and UGC-NET.

The decision comes amid ongoing concerns over exam administration, including allegations of irregularities and delays in result declaration. The NTA, established in 2017, has faced criticism for logistical issues during high-stakes tests. Officials stated that the restructuring is designed to address these challenges by infusing younger talent and strengthening managerial oversight.

“The changes are part of a continuous process to enhance the NTA's capacity and responsiveness,” a senior official said, requesting anonymity. The agency conducts over 20 major examinations annually, impacting millions of students.

This overhaul follows a period of intense scrutiny. In 2023, the NTA faced protests over alleged paper leaks and mismanagement in the NEET-UG exam. The agency has since implemented several reforms, including increased use of technology and tighter security protocols. The latest staff changes are expected to further reinforce these measures.

The recruitment of GMs and young professionals will be through a transparent process, with advertisements to be issued shortly. The NTA aims to complete the hiring within three months. Existing employees have been given notice, and their severance will be handled as per contractual terms.

Education experts have welcomed the move but called for sustained reforms. “Structural changes are necessary, but they must be accompanied by a robust grievance redressal system and independent oversight,” said Dr. Ravi Kumar, a policy analyst.

The NTA plays a crucial role in India's higher education landscape, administering entrance tests that determine admissions to premier institutions. The agency's performance directly affects the academic futures of millions. This rejig signals a renewed focus on accountability and efficiency.
