NLCIL and NALCO form joint venture for 1,080 MW coal-based power plant in Odisha
NLC India Limited (NLCIL) and National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) have signed a joint venture agreement to develop a 1,080 MW (4x270 MW) coal-based captive thermal power plant at Angul in Odisha. The agreement was signed in the presence of Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy.
The joint venture company will be equally promoted by NLCIL and NALCO, with each holding a 50% equity stake. The company will be responsible for developing, financing, constructing, owning, and operating the power plant. The primary objective is to ensure a reliable and long-term power supply to support NALCO's expansion projects.
NLCIL is a public sector undertaking engaged in coal mining and power generation, while NALCO is a major producer of aluminium and alumina. The captive power plant is expected to provide cost-effective and consistent electricity for NALCO's operations, reducing its dependence on grid power.
The project is located in the Angul district of Odisha, an area with significant industrial activity. The plant will use coal as fuel and is designed to meet the energy demands of NALCO's smelter and other facilities. The joint venture marks a strategic collaboration between two state-owned enterprises to enhance energy security and support industrial growth.
Further details on the project timeline and investment are awaited.
