NIT-Tiruchi launches AI-integrated courses, new postgraduate programmes for 2026-27
The National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi (NIT-T) has announced the introduction of three new postgraduate programmes and a PG diploma for the academic year 2026-27, alongside a focused integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into its curriculum. The move aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 and aims to meet evolving market demands.
Addressing a press conference in Tiruchi, NIT-T Director G. Aghila said the new M.Tech courses are in Urban Planning (Department of Architecture), Engineering Design (Mechanical Engineering), and Water Resources Engineering and Management (Civil Engineering). Additionally, a PG diploma in Healthcare Technology has been launched. These programmes incorporate subject-specific AI-based learning modules, and undergraduate students will receive orientation on AI applications in education.
The institute is also upskilling its faculty to adopt AI-based teaching methods. A new Tata Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, funded with ₹10 crore by TCS Foundation, has been established to support these efforts.
Despite economic challenges, NIT-T reported a placement rate of over 80% among registered applicants for the current academic year. The institution's focus on entrepreneurship through its innovation and incubation ecosystem has contributed to this outcome.
As part of campus expansion, six new annexe buildings for various departments have been sanctioned, with three already inaugurated. The Board of Governors has approved additional hostel accommodation for 2,000 students (1,200 boys and 800 girls), with construction expected to begin by December. Seven new Centres of Excellence have been set up in areas including Sustainability, Digital Infrastructure, Outreach and Digital Education, Global Academic and Research, Indian Knowledge Systems, and Integral Wellness.
