Nepal Communal Clash: One Dead, Indefinite Curfew in Sunsari District
One person was killed and over a dozen others, including security personnel, were injured in a communal clash in Nepal's Sunsari district, which shares a border with India, officials confirmed on Monday. The incident occurred on Sunday night in the Kaptangunj area of Devgunj Rural Municipality.
According to police, the violence erupted after members of two religious communities clashed over the use of loudspeakers and the display of religious flags during separate events. The District Administration Office in Sunsari responded by imposing indefinite prohibitory orders in five market areas from 7 am on Monday. These orders ban gatherings of more than four people, demonstrations, public meetings, and sit-ins until further notice.
Sunsari district lies in southeastern Nepal, adjacent to the Indian state of Bihar. Communal tensions have occasionally flared in the region, though such incidents remain infrequent. Authorities have deployed additional security forces to maintain order and are investigating the cause of the clash.
The injured have been admitted to a local hospital, with some listed in critical condition. Officials urge calm and call on both communities to resolve differences through dialogue. The prohibitory orders will remain in effect until the situation stabilizes.
