NEET UG Counselling 2026: Nadda reviews tech reforms for simplified process
Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda on Tuesday reviewed the preparedness for the upcoming NEET UG counselling 2026, which introduces several technology-driven and student-centric reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, accessibility and streamlining the admission process.
A key reform is the introduction of a one-time physical reporting requirement to reduce repeated visits by candidates. After seat allotment, candidates can choose between a Freeze or Float option online. Those opting for Freeze will physically report to the allotted institute for document verification and fee payment. Those selecting Float can participate in subsequent rounds for upgradation without immediate physical reporting; they will complete formalities online, keeping their provisional admission valid.
The upgradation facility remains available up to the third counselling round. After the third round, candidates holding allotted seats must physically report to their institutions for final verification and fee payment. This framework ensures only one-time physical reporting, one-time document verification, and one-time fee payment, reducing travel and simplifying procedures.
Another new feature is the online resignation facility. Candidates wishing to resign from their allotted seat, where permitted by rules, can submit resignation through the MCC Counselling Portal without needing to visit the institute in person, unless specified otherwise in the Information Bulletin.
The review highlighted measures to strengthen transparency and efficiency: pre-populated candidate data from the National Testing Agency (NTA), online document verification, seat matrix validation by the National Medical Commission (NMC), and verification by participating institutes. Special emphasis has been placed on improving accessibility for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD).
The Ministry has also completed the digitisation of the admission process for the NRI category. NRI candidates will now register entirely through the online counselling portal, uploading all required documents instead of submitting via email. Documents will be verified online by designated officers, ensuring a transparent and time-bound process.
