Murshidabad MLA Humayun Kabir issues threat against BJP workers at rally
Humayun Kabir, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Nowda and chief of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), made statements during a public rally in Rejinagar, Murshidabad district, on Friday that have drawn criticism. Speaking to a gathering, Kabir directed remarks at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its workers, threatening physical action if they crossed certain limits.
According to reports from the event, Kabir said he had communicated with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, acknowledging the BJP's electoral success but warning the party against excessive boasting in Murshidabad. He stated, “I told (Chief Minister) Suvendu Adhikari, it is good that you have won and the BJP has won. But ask (your) party not to boast too much in Murshidabad.”
Kabir then escalated his rhetoric, threatening BJP workers directly. “If they (BJP workers) cross the limits, there will be trouble. Lakhs will hit the streets, and I will lead the community. We will beat them up. There will be no one left to hold the BJP flag here. The BJP district president will also vanish,” he said.
The remarks have sparked controversy, with opponents accusing the MLA of inciting violence and undermining democratic norms. The BJP has condemned the statements, calling them a threat to law and order. No official complaint has been filed as of the time of reporting.
Murshidabad, a district in West Bengal, has seen heightened political tensions in recent months following the state assembly elections. Kabir, who was earlier with the Trinamool Congress before forming his own party, has been a vocal figure in regional politics. The incident adds to a series of confrontational statements made by political leaders across party lines in the state.
Authorities have not issued any comment on the matter. The Election Commission may take note of the speech if it is found to violate the Model Code of Conduct or other electoral laws.
