Mumbai Local Trains to Get Advanced Kavach 5.0 Safety System
Indian Railways is developing Kavach 5.0, the next generation of its indigenous automatic train protection system, specifically for Mumbai's suburban rail network. The upgraded system aims to enhance train safety, improve operational reliability, and support the city's high-density local train services.
Dr Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, confirmed the development to Indianexpress.com. He stated that Kavach 5.0 is currently under development and will be implemented on the Mumbai suburban network once ready.
According to the Ministry of Railways, Kavach 5.0, an advanced train safety and signalling system designed for suburban networks, was announced in April 2025. The system is expected to significantly reduce the gap between trains, allowing more frequent services while ensuring safe and efficient operations. The deployment is part of ongoing efforts to modernise India's rail infrastructure and improve passenger safety.
Kavach, meaning 'armour' in Hindi, is an indigenous anti-collision system developed by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and Indian industry. The current version, Kavach 4.0, is already in use on some sections of the Indian Railways network. The 5.0 version is tailored for suburban networks with higher train density and shorter headways.
The Mumbai suburban network, one of the busiest in the world, carries over 7 million passengers daily. Enhancing safety and capacity is critical to reducing accidents and improving punctuality. The new system will integrate with existing signalling infrastructure and provide real-time data to train operators to prevent collisions and overspeeding.
The development aligns with the government's focus on 'Make in India' and self-reliance in technology. No specific timeline for implementation has been announced, but trials are expected to begin after the system completes development and testing phases.
