Monsoon Arrives in Delhi After Slight Delay; Heavy Rain Alert for West and Central India

The Southwest Monsoon officially reached Delhi on Thursday, five days after its normal onset date of June 27, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed. This marks the first time since 2021 that the monsoon has arrived in the national capital in July.

The IMD has forecast thunderstorms and rain over many parts of Delhi on Thursday, with generally cloudy skies expected to prevail. Similar weather conditions are predicted for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

In Mumbai, heavy rain continued to lash the city on Thursday morning, causing waterlogging in low-lying areas such as Dadar, Parel, Hindmata, Charkop, Worli, Goregaon, and Andheri. Road and rail traffic were affected, with no immediate signs of easing. The IMD has forecast more rainfall throughout the day.

Senior IMD scientist Naresh Yadav stated that the monsoon is expected to advance further into several parts of North India in the coming days, covering Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Gujarat's west coast. He warned of extremely heavy rainfall over the Konkan region, Goa, and South Gujarat over the next four to five days.

A yellow alert has been issued for parts of western and central India due to expected heavy rainfall, while a red alert has been declared for the Konkan region, Goa, and South Gujarat. The IMD advises residents in these areas to take necessary precautions.
