Modi Urges Faster Decision-Making to Cement India-Australia Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called for expedited decision-making between India and Australia, likening the pace required to that of a Twenty20 cricket match. Speaking at a joint business event in New Delhi, Modi emphasized the need to translate strategic convergence into tangible outcomes.

'The world is moving at the speed of a T20 match, and our partnership must keep up,' Modi said, addressing industry leaders from both nations. He highlighted recent progress in defence cooperation, trade, and critical minerals, but stressed that bureaucratic delays could undermine momentum.

Modi's remarks come as India and Australia deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, signed in 2020. The two countries have since expanded cooperation in areas such as maritime security, cyber technology, and education. Bilateral trade reached $24 billion in 2022-23, with negotiations ongoing for a full free trade agreement.

Australian High Commissioner Philip Green, who also spoke at the event, echoed Modi's sentiment, stating that both governments were committed to removing bottlenecks. 'We are looking at a partnership that delivers for our businesses and our people, and speed is essential,' Green said.

The prime minister's cricket analogy resonated with the audience, given the shared passion for the sport in both countries. India and Australia are scheduled to play a five-match Test series later this year. Modi's push for agility reflects a broader government strategy to position India as a reliable partner in the Indo-Pacific region, countering China's influence.

Business leaders from sectors such as renewable energy, mining, and technology expressed optimism about the partnership's future. However, experts caution that implementation challenges remain, including regulatory hurdles and infrastructure gaps.
