Modi, Japanese PM Takaichi Discuss Semiconductors, AI in Summit Talks
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held summit talks with his Japanese counterpart, Sanae Takaichi, on July 2, 2026, focusing on expanding economic ties, enhancing resilient supply chains for semiconductors, and boosting cooperation in critical technologies.
Following the talks, the two leaders are expected to unveil a joint declaration on economic security cooperation and a joint statement on cooperation in artificial intelligence. The discussions also covered ways to enhance collaboration on critical minerals and pharmaceuticals.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the talks as 'taking forward a partnership anchored in trust, shared values and strategic convergence.' The Japanese Prime Minister is on a three-day visit to India.
India-Japan relations have deepened since being elevated to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014. As the two countries approach the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027, cooperation spans trade, investment, economic security, defence, science and technology, culture, and people-to-people ties, with over 70 dialogue mechanisms.
Prime Minister Modi visited Japan for the 15th Annual Summit in Tokyo in August 2025. The annual summit remains the flagship platform for driving the strategic agenda of the partnership.
