Government Halts Cancellation of BPL Ration Cards, Announces Review

The government has temporarily suspended the process of cancelling ration cards belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Rizwan Arshad announced on Saturday. The decision comes after the Union government directed the State government to cancel 7.59 lakh BPL cards, a process that had already resulted in the cancellation of approximately four lakh cards.

Speaking to press persons in Udupi, Mr. Arshad said he has instructed the department to stop the cancellation process immediately. "Instructions have been given not to cancel any more cards for now. Cancellation of approximately 3.5 lakh cards has been temporarily stopped," he said. The remaining 3.5 lakh cards will be reviewed, and further action will be taken after discussions at the government level.

The Minister also highlighted the need for fresh KYC (Know Your Customer) verification for approximately 2.59 crore ration cards in the State, as per Union government instructions. The last KYC was conducted five years ago. "This process will provide accurate information regarding the deceased, those above the poverty line, and those who do not need ration cards," Mr. Arshad explained. The KYC must be completed by September 30, 2026.

Addressing concerns about new BPL cards, the Minister said the matter would be discussed at the government level. He also mentioned that he would examine the possibility of supplying boiled rice, locally known as "kuchalakki," to ration card holders in the coastal belt. "Changes have been made in the ration system according to the respective areas. I will examine whether boiled rice can be supplied in the coastal area as well," he said.

The temporary suspension offers relief to BPL families who feared losing their entitlements. However, political observers note that the final decision on the remaining cancellations and the KYC update will be crucial in determining the impact on beneficiaries. The government has not yet provided a timeline for the review, but the Minister's statement indicates that the process will be re-evaluated before any further action.

The KYC update is expected to streamline the ration card system by removing ineligible beneficiaries, including those who have died or moved above the poverty line. Meanwhile, the supply of boiled rice in coastal areas is seen as a possible policy adjustment to meet regional dietary preferences.
