Meghalaya High Court Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Shillong Violence, Orders Action Report
The Meghalaya High Court on Tuesday took suo motu cognizance of the violence that erupted during a bike rally organised by the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) in Shillong a day earlier. A Division Bench comprising Justices HS Thangkhiew and W Diengdoh directed the authorities to take prompt and stringent action against those responsible, and file an action taken report by August 24.
The violence, which occurred on August 19, reportedly involved stone-pelting, vandalism, and assaults in several parts of the city. According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, at least 31 vehicles were damaged, 16 people were injured, and two vehicles were set ablaze. The court observed that government vehicles, police station vehicles, and public transport vehicles were among those damaged, and that the safety of citizens, including school-going children, was endangered.
The Bench also took note of the alleged desecration of statues of national heroes during the incident. While recording the state government's submission that some action has been taken and certain office-bearers of the organisation have been arrested, the court directed more intensive and immediate steps to be taken to apprehend all those involved. Three senior KSU leaders—president Raymond Kharjana, vice president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, and general secretary Reuben Najiar—have been arrested and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
The High Court has scheduled the next hearing for August 24, when the authorities are required to submit a detailed action taken report on the investigations, arrests, and measures taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents. The court's suo motu intervention underscores the judiciary's role in ensuring public order and accountability, especially when the safety of citizens and public property is at stake.
Authorities have urged citizens to maintain calm and cooperate with law enforcement. Further details about the sequence of events and the full extent of the damage are expected to emerge as the investigation proceeds.
