Mass Evacuation in Southwest France as Wildfire Ravages Thousands of Hectares

Nearly 40,000 people have been evacuated from a popular tourist destination in southwest France as a wildfire continues to spread, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed on Thursday. The blaze, which began in the village of Saumos on Wednesday, has consumed more than 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres) of land, including parts of the Cap-Ferret peninsula, a renowned vacation spot known for its pine forests and sand dunes.

Addressing reporters, Nunez stated that the evacuations were ongoing, with no casualties reported so far. “As I speak, gradually, 40,000 people have either been evacuated or are currently being evacuated,” he said. The minister described the fire as “the largest fire of the season” and noted that 80 homes have been damaged, with approximately 50 completely destroyed.

Over 1,000 firefighters have been deployed to combat the flames, which remain uncontrolled. Boats have transported more than 400 people from the Cap-Ferret peninsula, which stretches along the Atlantic coast west of Bordeaux. French President Emmanuel Macron described the situation as “extremely tense” on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter. He announced that France has activated the European Union's civil protection mechanism, expecting reinforcements including two Black Hawk helicopters from the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Authorities are urging residents and tourists to follow evacuation orders as the fire continues to threaten lives and property. Efforts to contain the blaze are expected to continue for several days, with weather conditions potentially complicating firefighting operations.
