Maharashtra IMA Calls Off July 20 Strike After High Court Stays Corporator's Bail

The Maharashtra branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has suspended its planned strike on July 20, following the Bombay High Court's decision to stay the bail granted to a Shiv Sena corporator accused of assaulting doctors.

The corporator was arrested earlier this week after a video surfaced showing him allegedly manhandling medical staff at a civic hospital in Thane. The incident sparked outrage among the medical community, prompting the IMA to announce a statewide strike demanding stricter protection for healthcare workers.

However, on Thursday, the High Court intervened and stayed the bail order, noting that the gravity of the offence warranted further scrutiny. The court also directed the police to expedite the investigation. In response, the IMA decided to call off the strike, citing the court's action as a positive step towards ensuring justice.

Dr. Parthasarathi, president of the Maharashtra IMA, stated, 'We welcome the High Court's decision. It shows that the judiciary is sensitive to the safety of doctors. We have suspended our strike to allow the legal process to take its course.'

The IMA had earlier demanded the enactment of a central law to protect healthcare professionals from violence, similar to the existing state laws in some states. The assault has reignited calls for stronger protective measures, with many doctors expressing concern over rising incidents of violence in hospitals.

The state government has also assured that it will take necessary steps to ensure the safety of medical staff. Meanwhile, the corporator remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by healthcare workers in India, who often deal with aggressive behaviour from patients or their relatives. The IMA has urged the government to create a safer working environment and implement strict penalties for those who attack medical personnel.
