Maharashtra Government Partners Google to Train Over 4 Lakh Teachers in AI
The Maharashtra government has taken a significant step towards integrating technology into education by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Google for Education. The agreement, formalised on Friday at Mantralaya in Mumbai, aims to provide artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology training to more than four lakh teachers across the state.
The MoU was signed in the presence of School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse, who highlighted the programme's structure. Under the initiative, selected ‘master trainers’ will undergo specialised training first. These master trainers will then train other teachers, ensuring that every school in the state benefits from the programme.
Minister Bhuse emphasised that the entire training will be provided free of cost by Google, with no financial burden on the state government. He also assured that the Maharashtra government will retain full control over the training process and will ensure digital safety for all participating teachers.
The programme is expected to enhance the digital literacy of teachers, enabling them to incorporate AI tools and digital resources into their classrooms. This move aligns with the broader national push for digital education and skill development. The training will cover various aspects of AI, including its applications in education, data privacy, and ethical use of technology.
Officials noted that this partnership is part of a larger effort to modernise the state's education system. By equipping teachers with advanced digital skills, the government aims to improve the quality of education and prepare students for a technology-driven future. The training modules will be designed to be accessible and practical, catering to teachers across different subjects and grade levels.
The initiative has been welcomed by educational experts, who see it as a positive step towards bridging the digital divide. However, some have called for careful implementation to ensure that the training reaches rural and remote areas effectively. The government has stated that it will monitor the programme's progress and make adjustments as needed.
This partnership between the Maharashtra government and Google for Education reflects a growing trend of public-private collaborations in the education sector. With a focus on AI training, the programme aims to empower teachers with skills that are increasingly relevant in the 21st century.
