Maharashtra Bullock Cart Race Draws Thousands, Champion Bull 'Bakasur' Wins Top Prize
The annual Hindkesari Pedgaon 'Bailgada Sharyat' (bullock cart race) was held in Pedgaon village, Maharashtra, once again demonstrating the state's rural sporting traditions. The event attracted more than 1,000 entrants and thousands of spectators from across the region. Pedgaon is considered one of the most prominent venues on the state's bullock cart racing circuit, drawing competitors and enthusiasts each year.
The competition began around 7 a.m., with participants arriving before sunrise to prepare their bullocks. A large crowd gathered around the venue, with many spectators occupying a nearby hilltop for a panoramic view of the track.
The race comprised multiple rounds testing speed, endurance and precision. The top prize was set at ₹1,21,000, along with the honour associated with winning at Pedgaon. Each run was crucial as only one winner could claim the grand prize.
Among the competitors was a bull named 'Bakasur', well-known for his speed and consistency. Spectators referred to him as the 'Sachin Tendulkar' of bullock cart racing. Bakasur lived up to his reputation, crossing the finish line first and sparking celebrations among the crowd. The bull was mobbed by fans seeking photos and a glimpse of the champion.
The event, however, was not without incident. After one race, a team of racing bulls veered into the crowd, causing a brief scare. No injuries were reported, but spectators had to scramble to safety.
The contest highlighted the enduring tradition of Bailgada Sharyat and its significance to Maharashtra's agricultural heritage. Organisers and participants expressed satisfaction with the event, noting the continued passion that brings people to Pedgaon each year.
