Maharashtra Bans Junk Food Sales Near Schools to Promote Healthier Eating

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an order banning the sale, free distribution, and advertising of foods high in fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS) within school premises and within a 50-metre radius. The directive applies to all schools in the state, including government-run, aided, private, residential, and those affiliated with any board, covering approximately 1.08 lakh schools and nearly two crore students.

Items such as vada pav, samosas, deep-fried snacks, chips, cold drinks, sugary beverages, chocolates, and ice cream are now prohibited in these zones. The order, announced on Wednesday by Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, is part of the state's 'Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra' campaign. Mundhe stated that the goal is to ensure safe and nutritious food reaches every child, fostering a culture of healthy eating.

The order mandates that all school canteens, hostel canteens, Mid-Day Meal (PM-POSHAN) kitchens, Anganwadi centres, and food suppliers obtain a valid FSSAI licence and registration. Schools are required to display a Food Safety Display Board, appoint a food safety supervisor, implement the 'Eat Right School' campaign, promote health and wellness activities, and ensure safe drinking water, clean kitchens, proper food storage, and hygiene.

Primary enforcement responsibility lies with school principals and management. The School Education Department will monitor compliance in government and aided schools, while other boards and local bodies will oversee their respective institutions. The FDA plans to conduct inspection drives across the state. Non-compliance may result in notices, suspension or cancellation of licences, seizure of food items, and legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

The order gives effect to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India's (FSSAI) 'Safe Food and Balanced Diets for Children in School Regulations, 2020.' State authorities believe the measure will help reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, and other lifestyle-related diseases among children, while promoting healthier eating habits. The FDA also intends to hold workshops with school management at district and taluka levels to raise awareness about nutritious eating.
