Madras High Court Demands Action Report on Thoothukudi Police Firing
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday sought detailed reports from the Tamil Nadu government on a batch of public interest litigation petitions filed in 2018 regarding the Thoothukudi police firing incident.
A Division Bench comprising Justices C.V. Karthikeyan and R. Sakthivel requested specifics on the Justice Aruna Jagadeesan Commission of Inquiry report, actions taken based on the report, relief provided to the families of victims, and other related details.
In August 2018, the High Court had ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the police firing that occurred during anti-Sterlite protests on May 22 and 23, 2018, in Thoothukudi. The protests, demanding the closure of Vedanta's Sterlite Copper plant, turned violent, resulting in 13 deaths and numerous injuries.
The matter was listed under the caption 'for reporting compliance' and has been adjourned to August 13 for further hearing.
