Madras Day: CM Vijay urges city to preserve heritage, build modern metropolis
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Saturday (August 22, 2026) extended his greetings on the occasion of Madras Day, highlighting Chennai's unique blend of historical legacy and modern progress. In a message posted on X, he described the city as a symbol of unity in diversity, where tradition and innovation thrive side by side.
Madras Day is observed annually on August 22 to commemorate the founding of the city of Madras in 1639, when the British East India Company established a trading post on the Coromandel Coast. Over the centuries, the settlement grew into a major urban centre, and in 1996 the city was officially renamed Chennai. The day is marked by heritage walks, exhibitions, and discussions that celebrate the city's rich past and evolving identity.
In his greetings, the Chief Minister said that Chennai carries the imprints of history and moves forward with the pace of modernity. He noted that the city is a confluence of historical significance, cultural heritage, and excellence in fields such as education, healthcare, and technology. He also praised the hard work and innovation of its people, stating that Chennai embraces individuals from diverse languages, communities, and cultures, offering opportunities to all.
Mr. Vijay further called on citizens to preserve Chennai's historical legacy and cultural identity while working to elevate it as a world-class, modern metropolis with advanced infrastructure. He urged collective resolve to ensure equal opportunities, a safe environment, and a prosperous life for every resident.
The Chief Minister's message comes at a time when Chennai is undergoing rapid urban transformation, with ongoing infrastructure projects in metro rail, road networks, and digital connectivity. At the same time, heritage conservation efforts have gained attention, with civic groups and government bodies collaborating to protect colonial-era buildings and traditional neighbourhoods. Madras Day celebrations this year include virtual heritage tours, school competitions, and public lectures on sustainable urban development.
Political observers note that such messages from the Chief Minister are aimed at fostering a sense of civic pride and social cohesion. The emphasis on equal opportunities and safety reflects broader state policies towards inclusive growth, though critics have often questioned the pace of implementation on the ground. Nevertheless, the occasion serves as a reminder of the city's enduring spirit and the shared responsibility of its citizens in shaping its future.
