Lucknow Building Fire: FIR Alleges Illegal Commercial Use Led to Tragedy
A devastating fire broke out in a multi-storey building in Lucknow on the night of June 22, 2026, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries. The First Information Report (FIR) filed by the local police has cited illegal commercial use of the building as a key factor that may have contributed to the severity of the incident.
The building, located in the busy Hazratganj area, was reportedly being used for both residential and commercial purposes without proper approvals from the municipal authorities. According to preliminary investigations, the fire originated from an electrical short circuit on the ground floor, which then spread rapidly due to the presence of inflammable materials stored for commercial activities.
As of the latest reports, at least 15 people have been confirmed dead and over 30 others have been injured, many of whom are in critical condition at local hospitals. Rescue operations were carried out by the Lucknow Fire Department, which deployed over a dozen fire tenders to control the blaze. The fire was brought under control after nearly four hours of effort.
The FIR, registered at the Hazratganj police station, names the building owner and several tenants involved in commercial operations. The charges include culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing death by negligence, and violations of the Uttar Pradesh Fire Safety Act and municipal building codes. Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the case, while the building owner is absconding.
Local residents have alleged that the building lacked proper fire safety measures, including functioning fire extinguishers and emergency exits. The district administration has ordered a thorough inquiry into the incident and has promised strict action against those found guilty.
This tragedy highlights the persistent issue of illegal commercial conversions of residential buildings in many Indian cities, often flouting safety norms. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh to the seriously injured.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations and regular inspections of buildings used for mixed purposes. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have assured that all responsible parties will be brought to justice.
