Lok Sabha Suspends TMC's Kalyan Banerjee for Rest of Monsoon Session After Verbal Abuse Complaints

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee was suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the Monsoon Session on Wednesday after two women MPs complained to Speaker Om Birla that he had used abusive language against them.

The complainants were Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) members Satabdi Roy and Mitali Bagh, both former TMC members, according to sources.

Following the suspension, Banerjee was barred from entering the House premises for the rest of the session. He was later taken to meet the Speaker by fellow TMC MPs for a hearing.

Under parliamentary rules, a member can be suspended for disorderly conduct or for using unparliamentary language. The Speaker has the authority to suspend a member for the remainder of the session if the conduct is deemed serious.

This is not the first such complaint against Banerjee. In May, then TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar had written to Speaker Om Birla, seeking permission to lodge a formal complaint against Banerjee, alleging that he had repeatedly verbally abused her inside Parliament. The status of that complaint is not clear.

The suspension has drawn attention to the issue of decorum and conduct within Parliament, with calls for stricter enforcement of rules against unparliamentary language.
