LDF alleges abuse of power over 'Mayor Care' Onam kits in Thiruvananthapuram

LDF alleges abuse of power over 'Mayor Care' Onam kits in Thiruvananthapuram

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Thiruvananthapuram Corporation of impropriety in the distribution of Onam kits under the 'Mayor Care' initiative. The kits were reportedly funded by gifts and donations collected from commercial establishments.

LDF Parliamentary Party leader S.P. Deepak said the decision by Mayor V.V. Rajesh to accept gifts worth lakhs from major commercial establishments and distribute them to employees and councillors was a serious abuse of power. He said the employees earn salaries in lakhs and councillors are public servants, making them ineligible for such gifts under existing norms.

The LDF has filed a complaint with the Minister for Local Self Governments, demanding state intervention and a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

Mayor Rajesh, who could not be reached for comment, had said on the day of distribution that the Corporation had not spent any money from its own funds for the kits, which were given to all employees regardless of political affiliation. The LDF, however, alleged that clothes and other items were delivered to the Corporation from major real estate firms, malls, and clothing stores in the name of 'Mayor Care'.

Mr. Deepak questioned the propriety of accepting gifts from private establishments when clear norms approved by the municipal council and the government exist. He also sought to know whether the Corporation extended any undue benefits to the establishments that gave the gifts. He demanded that details of any donations received from international corporate institutions be disclosed.

In addition, Mr. Deepak alleged that a large catering company provided the meal for the Onam celebration programme organised by employees at the Corporation office free of charge. He said it was ironic that the head of the Corporation, which is responsible for inspecting and taking action against illegal constructions, would accept such freebies from large establishments.

The LDF also raised questions about the distribution of educational kits for students. Mr. Deepak claimed that while kits worth lakhs of rupees were received from large corporate institutions, fewer than 250 students had received them. He asked the Mayor to clarify the number of kits received, their value, the number distributed, and the utilisation of the remaining funds.

Historically, employees and councillors of the Corporation used to organise Onam celebrations and the traditional feast (sadya) by pooling in their own money. This year's arrangements and the 'Mayor Care' initiative have become a matter of political dispute, with the LDF seeking transparency and accountability.

The controversy highlights a broader concern about the acceptance of gifts by public officials and the need for clarity on rules governing such donations. The outcome of the LDF's complaint will likely determine whether further action is taken.
