Ladakh Shuts Down: Leaders Accuse Centre of Imposing Policies
Ladakh observed a complete shutdown on Tuesday, responding to a call by the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance. These two powerful socio-political bodies represent the two regions that constitute the Union Territory.
The shutdown followed a disagreement with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs over a document recording the minutes of a meeting held on May 22 between ministry officials and representatives of these groups. On Saturday, the organisations jointly announced the protest.
On Tuesday, businesses in Leh, Kargil, and other areas of Ladakh remained closed. The Leh administration had denied permission to the Ladakh Buddhist Association for a peaceful demonstration. However, Cherring Dorjay Lakrook, co-chairman of the Apex Body, stated that the protest would proceed regardless.
