Ladakh Activist Sonam Wangchuk Ends Hunger Strike, LAB Welcomes Move
Sonam Wangchuk, the renowned climate activist from Ladakh, has ended his hunger strike, a move welcomed by the Leh Apex Body (LAB). Gelek Phunchok, convenor of LAB, issued a statement confirming the organisation's approval.
“The LAB welcomes Sonam Wangchuk’s decision to end his fast, a step it had consistently requested in view of his deteriorating health,” Phunchok said.
Wangchuk, known for his innovative ice-stupa technique for water conservation, launched the indefinite fast on August 8, 2024, demanding constitutional safeguards for Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule and other environmental protections. The protest drew attention to the region's fragile ecosystem and the need for greater autonomy.
His decision to end the fast came after discussions with government representatives, who assured him that their demands would be considered. The exact details of the assurances have not been disclosed, but Wangchuk expressed cautious optimism.
Ladakh, a Union Territory since 2019, has seen repeated calls for special status to protect its unique culture and environment. The LAB, an umbrella body of civil society groups, has been a key voice in these demands. The organisation had earlier urged Wangchuk to prioritise his health.
The end of the fast has been met with relief across Ladakh, with many hoping for constructive dialogue. However, activists caution that the underlying issues require sustained attention.
