Nearly two weeks after being assigned the Bengaluru Development portfolio, Krishna Byre Gowda formally assumed charge as minister on Tuesday. In his first review meeting, he met officials from five city corporations, B-SMILE, GBA, and Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited.

Gowda assured residents that his priority would be improving road quality and addressing civic grievances. “Building good roads is not rocket science,” he said, emphasising a practical approach to urban infrastructure.

The minister had initially hesitated to accept the portfolio over concerns about the scope of his authority. He sought control over the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and Bengaluru Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA), but both agencies have been retained by Chief Minister D K Shivakumar. Following discussions in Delhi, Gowda eventually took charge.

The delay in assumption of office highlighted tensions over the division of responsibilities among state agencies governing Bengaluru. Gowda’s portfolio includes several urban development functions, but the exclusion of BDA and BMRDA from his purview limits his direct oversight of land allocation and metropolitan planning.

Political observers noted that the arrangement could lead to coordination challenges, as the BDA and BMRDA handle key projects in the city. Gowda, however, expressed confidence in working with the chief minister to address Bengaluru’s infrastructure needs.

During the meeting, officials presented updates on waste management, road repairs, and pending complaints. Gowda instructed them to fast-track grievance resolution and ensure transparency in public works.

Bengaluru, India’s IT hub, has faced persistent issues with traffic congestion, potholed roads, and waste disposal. The new minister’s emphasis on road quality is seen as a response to widespread public dissatisfaction.
