Kolkata Police Files Case Against TMC for Blocking Road During Martyrs' Day Rally
The Kolkata Police on Wednesday registered a case against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for allegedly blocking a road during a Martyrs' Day meeting led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The meeting, held near the Birla Planetarium, drew a large turnout, but the police claim it violated a Calcutta High Court order.
According to the court's directive, the TMC was permitted to hold the meeting only on one side of Cathedral Road, keeping the other side open for traffic. However, police officials said that on Tuesday, after the meeting began, thousands of party supporters spilled onto both sides of the road, disrupting vehicular movement.
The police alleged that the crowd gathered beyond the designated area, forcing authorities to take measures to manage congestion. The case was filed under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for obstructing a public way and disobeying a court order.
The TMC has not yet commented on the police action. The incident highlights ongoing tensions between the ruling party and law enforcement in the state.
