Kolkata Nurse Found Dead in Hospital Washroom, Police Launch Probe
Kolkata: A 30-year-old nurse was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside a washroom at N.R.S. Medical College and Hospital late Wednesday night, prompting the Kolkata Police to order an inquiry into the incident.
According to officials, the nurse had reported for her night shift at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Approximately two hours later, her colleagues noticed she was missing. A search of the premises led them to find her lying unconscious on the bathroom floor. She was immediately rushed for medical treatment, where the attending doctor declared her dead.
Preliminary examination by police revealed no visible marks of injury on her body, and no suicide note was found at the scene. A post-mortem examination has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death. Police said they are yet to ascertain whether the case involves suicide or foul play.
The incident has drawn attention to the safety of healthcare workers inside hospitals, particularly women working night shifts. It also brings back memories of the tragic death of a 31-year-old female doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, two years ago. That case had sparked widespread outrage and raised serious questions about the security of medical professionals and women in workplaces across the state.
In the current case, senior police officers have visited the hospital and are supervising the investigation. Security footage and statements from colleagues are being examined to piece together the sequence of events. The hospital administration has extended its cooperation to the investigating team.
The death has once again underscored the need for robust safety protocols within medical institutions. Authorities are expected to review existing measures to ensure no such incident occurs in the future. The post-mortem report and further forensic analysis are awaited, which may provide crucial leads in the case.
The police have assured that a thorough and impartial investigation will be carried out, and any individual found responsible will be dealt with according to the law. Meanwhile, colleagues and family members of the deceased nurse expressed shock and grief over the tragic loss.
