Kerala's Ernakulam District Reports Highest Influenza Cases in July; 24 Deaths Statewide
Ernakulam district has recorded the highest number of influenza infections in Kerala for July, with 993 cases reported up to July 27. Statewide, 2,468 influenza cases were recorded in July, resulting in 24 deaths. Since the beginning of the year, the state has reported 5,519 cases and 60 deaths from the disease.
A senior Health department official noted that H1N1 cases are prominent and urged the public to follow preventive measures. “We have continued to give recommendations and advisories to the public to follow cough etiquette, wear masks, use sanitisers, and maintain social distancing. This is essential to control the spread of infections,” the official said. The official also suggested that the higher number of cases in Ernakulam could be due to increased screening and testing.
Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, convener of the research cell at the Indian Medical Association, Kerala State, emphasized that influenza is not the same as the common cold. “Influenza can cause fatal outcomes even in healthy individuals and, therefore, deserves utmost attention,” he said. He explained that influenza cases rise across the country with the onset of the monsoon, with symptoms including extreme weakness, high fever, and muscle ache, with or without upper respiratory symptoms. He advised seeking medical help without delay.
Dr. Jayadevan added that Kochi’s position as a major travel hub and referral centre is one reason for the district reporting more cases. He noted that the commonly circulating influenza viruses are H1N1, H3N2, and Influenza B, with the former two expected to be in circulation now.
Dr. Minu Mohan, Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at Government Medical College, Ernakulam, said that while influenza cases are increasingly being reported, the situation has not reached an epidemic level. “Like other viruses, influenza viruses accumulate mutations over time. This enables them to cause recurring outbreaks by evading immunity,” Dr. Mohan explained.
