Kerala riverbank erosion threatens homes, farms; locals demand action
Riverbank erosion along the Iruvanjippuzha and Cherupuzha rivers in Kozhikode district has become a growing concern, with residents reporting damage to houses, agricultural land, and public infrastructure. The affected areas include Karassery and Kodiyathur grama panchayats, where the problem intensifies during the monsoon season.
According to local residents, large stretches of farmland are washed away each year when the rivers swell, causing significant financial losses to farmers. They stated that despite repeated assurances from authorities, no lasting protection measures have been implemented.
Houses located close to the riverbanks are in a precarious state, with the rivers gradually eroding private land. Many families said they live in constant fear of further erosion during heavy rain.
Residents have been seeking permanent riverbank protection for more than a decade. They also highlighted that several drinking water project tanks situated along the riverbanks are at risk, endangering public infrastructure.
Mohammed Kakkad, a resident and activist, said: "Riverbank erosion is posing a serious threat to houses and agricultural land. Although retaining walls have been built at a few locations, long stretches remain unprotected. If timely action is not taken, houses could be lost to the rivers. The authorities should implement comprehensive riverbank protection measures without further delay."
