Kerala Plus One: 2.4 lakh seats allotted, but 2 lakh students still await placement
The Directorate of General Education in Kerala released the second allotment list for Plus One higher secondary single-window admissions on Sunday, with over 2.4 lakh students receiving seats. However, the process has highlighted a significant shortfall, leaving more than 2 lakh applicants yet to be placed.
According to official data, 4,44,772 students applied for Plus One admission this year, including 43,735 seeking seats outside their home districts. Against 3,17,902 available seats, 2,40,568 students secured allotments in the second phase, leaving 77,334 vacancies across the state.
Despite this, 2,04,204 students remain unallotted even after two rounds. Of these, 1,20,003 students — nearly 59% of the state total — belong to the six northern districts, from Kasaragod to Palakkad. The number of applicants in these districts far exceeds the available vacancies.
Malappuram is the worst affected, with 43,005 students still awaiting admission against only 18,107 vacant seats. Kozhikode and Palakkad face similar crises: Kozhikode has 23,742 students waiting for 8,274 seats, while Palakkad has 22,078 applicants for 5,405 vacancies. In Kannur, 16,961 students seek allotment against 8,480 vacancies; in Kasaragod, 9,323 students await seats with only 4,925 vacancies; and Wayanad has 4,894 students waiting for 2,094 seats.
The first allotment had covered 2,46,638 students, of whom 2,20,465 joined their allotted schools. Of these, 96,721 took temporary admission, while 1,23,744 secured permanent admission by paying fees. However, 24,978 students could not join within the stipulated time, and 1,195 allotments were cancelled due to application errors. This freed up 26,173 seats, which were added to the 71,264 vacancies from the first round for the second allotment process.
Students who received allotments can secure admission from 10 a.m. on Monday to 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Those who received their first option must pay fees and take permanent admission. Failure to take at least temporary admission will result in exclusion from future allotments.
