Kerala Health Department Intensifies Surveillance After Woman Dies of H1N1 in Kasaragod
A 56-year-old woman from Ajanur in Kasaragod district, Kerala, died of H1N1 influenza, commonly known as swine flu, while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mangaluru on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Yashoda.
Following the reported death, the Kerala Health department has stepped up surveillance and preventive measures in the Kanhangad area. Samples have been collected from seven individuals who were in close contact with the deceased and sent for laboratory testing. Their health condition is being closely monitored.
Health officials have urged the public to be vigilant and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, or difficulty breathing. People with respiratory complaints have been advised to visit the nearest government health centre without delay.
Authorities have also recommended that individuals showing symptoms wear masks in public places and avoid unnecessary contact with others. Health workers are emphasising the importance of frequent hand washing with soap and water, and covering the mouth and nose with a cloth or tissue while coughing or sneezing.
Officials have stated that surveillance has been strengthened in the area in view of the possibility of further transmission. The department continues to monitor the situation and urges the community to follow preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus.
