Kerala forms three-member panel to oversee debris removal at Kalladi tunnel site
The Kerala government has constituted a three-member panel to study and submit a report on the removal of excavation debris piled up in front of the Kalladi tunnel site in Wayanad district.
The panel includes Santhosh G. Thampi, Professor at the National Institute of Technology Kozhikode; Jude Emmanuel, Environmental Scientist from the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change; and a representative of the National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS), Thiruvananthapuram.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, with Public Works Minister P.K. Basheer and Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala in attendance on Friday.
The committee will visit the site and guide the District Disaster Management Authority in the safe removal of the debris. The debris will be transported to disposal sites identified by the Public Works department for the twin-tunnel project, and by the Project Implementation Unit for the Wayanad Township Project. The committee will also prepare a short action plan for the removal.
The Kalladi tunnel is part of a major infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity in the hilly region of Wayanad. The debris accumulation has raised concerns about environmental impact and safety, prompting the government to seek expert input.
The panel is expected to submit its report within a stipulated timeframe, ensuring that the removal process adheres to environmental and safety norms.
