Kerala Explores Airstrip Construction in Three Districts to Boost Emergency Response and Connectivity
The Kerala government has initiated a techno-economic feasibility study to establish airstrips in the districts of Idukki, Wayanad, and Kasaragod. The move aims to enhance aviation connectivity and facilitate emergency transport during natural calamities, enabling the operation of small aircraft and helicopters.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced this during the Question Hour in the Kerala Legislative Assembly on Wednesday. He stated that the Kerala Rail Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) has been appointed as the project management consultant for the study. Subsequently, the transport consultancy and engineering firm RITES entered into an agreement with KIIFCON (Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Corporation), a joint venture selected through a tendering process.
In addition to the airstrip project, the Chief Minister informed the Assembly that construction work for five helipads has already commenced in Wayanad district. These helipads are being built using funds from the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) to expedite rescue operations during natural disasters.
The feasibility study and helipad construction underscore the state government's efforts to strengthen infrastructure for disaster management and improve connectivity in these hilly and remote regions.
