Kerala Braces for More Extremely Heavy Rain as IMD Upgrades Alert for Wayanad, Kozhikode
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Wayanad and Kozhikode districts in Kerala on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. This comes a day after these districts experienced severe downpours, with Wayanad recording 265 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, classified as extremely heavy rainfall by the IMD.
An orange alert has been issued for Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts, where intense heavy rainfall is expected within 24 hours. A yellow alert is in place for Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Idukki districts, warning of isolated heavy rain.
The heavy rainfall is attributed to a depression over the Bay of Bengal, which has triggered widespread precipitation across Kerala, particularly in northern parts and along the west coast. On Monday, July 6, a yellow alert was in effect for Wayanad, but the actual rainfall far exceeded predictions.
Residents and authorities in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the IMD continues to monitor the situation. The red alert indicates the likelihood of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, which can lead to flooding, landslides, and disruptions to daily life.
