Russian Drone Strikes on Ukrainian Shopping Centre Kill 14, Wound 120

Russian Drone Strikes on Ukrainian Shopping Centre Kill 14, Wound 120

At least 14 people were killed and more than 120 wounded on Friday when two Russian drones struck a shopping centre in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih, local authorities said.

Among the wounded were 22 children, according to Serhiy Hanzha, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, who posted updates on the Telegram messaging app. He said 29 people were in serious condition, including five children, and shared a photograph showing thick black smoke billowing from a large industrial building.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack as "absolutely cynical and despicable," saying that a second Russian drone struck the shopping centre half an hour after the first, apparently in a deliberate attempt to target emergency service personnel responding to the initial blast. He described the attacks as "terrorist acts" and urged the international community to hold Russia accountable.

The strike came as Russia continues to escalate its air campaign against Ukraine, with fighting on the ground nearing the four-and-a-half-year mark. On Thursday, 17 people were killed in a Russian ballistic missile attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. Ukraine has also intensified its own strikes on Russian territory, focusing on oil facilities and logistics infrastructure in an effort to undermine Moscow's ability to sustain its military operations.

Kryvyi Rih, the birthplace of President Zelensky, has been repeatedly targeted by Russian forces throughout the war. Friday's attack, which occurred in daylight, drew widespread condemnation from Ukrainian officials and civilians.

Local emergency services said rescue operations continued into the evening, with crews searching through debris for any remaining victims. The shopping centre, a busy area in the city, was reportedly crowded at the time of the strike, contributing to the high number of casualties.

International reactions have yet to fully emerge, but the attack is expected to reinforce calls for increased air defence support for Ukraine. Western nations have supplied Ukraine with advanced missile systems, but Ukrainian officials have repeatedly stressed the need for more resources to counter drone and missile attacks.

The United Nations has documented numerous instances of civilian infrastructure being damaged or destroyed since the start of the conflict, including hospitals, schools, and residential areas. Such attacks are prohibited under international humanitarian law unless they can be justified as military targets.

Russia has not yet commented on the specific incident. In previous similar attacks, Russian officials have claimed that their forces target only military infrastructure and that any civilian casualties are unintentional. However, independent investigations and witness accounts have often contradicted these claims.

As the war enters its fifth year, both sides have shown no sign of de-escalation. Diplomatic efforts have largely stalled, and the conflict continues to exact a heavy toll on civilians. Friday's strike on Kryvyi Rih serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing human cost of the war.

This report is based on information provided by local authorities and statements released by the Ukrainian government. Further details may emerge as investigations continue.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.

Ukrainian officials say a slowdown in Starlink and Starshield services has disrupted drone operations, frontline logistics and air defence, and some allege deliberate interference. The reports came days after President Donald Trump announced an “energy ceasefire” and a plan to buy diesel from Russia, raising fresh questions in Kyiv about Washington’s reliability as an ally. The claims have not been independently verified.
