Kashmiri Activist Khurram Parvez Granted Bail, Set for Release After Years in Custody
A Delhi court on Saturday granted bail to Kashmiri human rights activist Khurram Parvez in a case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, officials said. The order paves the way for his release from custody, subject to the detailed order being issued.
Parvez had been in jail since his arrest in connection with the case. The bail was granted by Sessions Judge Pitamber Dutt of Patiala House Court. Earlier, on June 10, the Delhi High Court had granted him bail in another UAPA case — a terror conspiracy case lodged by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). With the latest order, Parvez now faces no pending cases.
The court's detailed order is awaited. Parvez's legal team argued that the charges against him were baseless and that he had been subjected to prolonged detention. The prosecution opposed the bail, citing the seriousness of the allegations.
Khurram Parvez is a well-known human rights activist from Jammu and Kashmir, with a history of documenting rights violations. His arrest and detention have been closely watched by human rights organizations both in India and internationally.
