Karnataka Voter Roll Revision: Extended Deadline Seeks to Ease Burden for Voters and Officials
Over two weeks have passed since the door-to-door enumeration phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls began in Karnataka. The process, aimed at updating and correcting the voter list, has faced several challenges, prompting the Election Commission to extend the deadline for submitting claims and objections.
The SIR, which started on a specified date, involves Block Level Officers (BLOs) visiting households to verify and update voter details. However, many citizens have reported difficulties in getting their names added or corrections made due to long queues, missing documents, and lack of awareness. Officials, too, are struggling with the mammoth task of covering all households in their assigned areas within the stipulated time.
In response, the Election Commission extended the deadline for filing claims and objections by a week, allowing more time for both voters and BLOs to complete the process. This move is expected to reduce the pressure on officials and ensure that eligible voters are not left out of the final rolls.
Despite the extension, challenges remain. Many voters are unaware of the revision process or the documents required, leading to repeated visits to BLOs. Additionally, technical glitches in the online portal have hindered smooth submission of applications. The Election Commission has urged citizens to cooperate and use the extra time wisely to get their names added or corrected.
The SIR is crucial ahead of the upcoming elections, as an accurate voter list ensures fair representation. The final electoral roll will be published after the revision, and voters are advised to check their names and details before then.
