Karnataka Minister Urges Tamil Nadu to Understand State's Rainfall Deficit in Cauvery Water Dispute

Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has appealed to Tamil Nadu not to exert pressure on Karnataka for the release of Cauvery water, citing the state's rainfall deficit and low reservoir levels. Speaking to reporters in Mandya on Sunday, Kumaraswamy said Tamil Nadu should recognise the challenges posed by inadequate rainfall in Karnataka.

He recalled that Karnataka had released surplus Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu in years of abundant rainfall, sometimes nearly twice the required quantity. Calling for cooperative federalism, he urged both states to maintain cordial relations and avoid unnecessary disputes.

Kumaraswamy also defended the proposed Mekedatu balancing reservoir project, stating it is intended to use Karnataka's legitimate share of Cauvery water for drinking water needs of Bengaluru and surrounding areas. He criticised Tamil Nadu's opposition, noting that the Detailed Project Report has been submitted and surplus water would still flow downstream when reservoirs are full.

The Union Minister took a swipe at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for not effectively raising the Mekedatu issue in Parliament. He credited former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda with efforts to advance the project and protect Karnataka's interests.

Kumaraswamy said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed concern over Karnataka's rain deficit during Union Cabinet discussions. He urged political parties in Tamil Nadu to stop pressuring Karnataka on the issue, as the rainfall situation remains uncertain.
