Jhon Arias' Rise from Poverty to World Cup Goal Sends Colombia Through
Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match as Colombia defeated Ghana 1-0 in the World Cup round of 32 in Kansas City on Friday. The goal, in the 14th minute, sent Colombia into the last 16 against Switzerland.
Arias, born in Quibdo—one of the wettest cities on Earth and capital of a Colombian department without a top-flight club—has emerged from humble beginnings. His journey mirrors that of fellow Quibdo native Jackson Martinez. Arias told World Football Index that his earliest football memory is playing with his brother in his aunt's living room. He pursued the sport despite hardships, even considering medicine as a backup career.
His professional career began in Mexican youth academies before he returned to Colombia at age 19. He played for Patriotas Boyaca, Llaneros, America de Cali, and Independiente Santa Fe before moving to Fluminense in Brazil. At Fluminense, he won the Copa Libertadores in 2023, beating Boca Juniors 2-1 in the final. He later impressed at the Club World Cup, earning three Man of the Match awards and scoring against Inter Milan before Chelsea eliminated his team in the semi-finals.
His performances earned him a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League. However, he struggled to adapt, scoring only twice in 26 appearances as the club faced a relegation battle. He moved to Palmeiras in February, stating that the context at Wolves was difficult and that the team's top scorer had only two goals.
In the match against Ghana, Colombia dominated after the early goal. Luis Diaz had a second goal ruled out for offside. Ghana failed to register a single shot on target despite having eight attempts. Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz noted that the team lost discipline and organisation after an early injury to Marvin Senaya, who was replaced by Alidu Seidu.
Arias' goal came from a cross by substitute Nuno Santos, who had replaced the injured Jhon Cordoba. Arias, unmarked, guided the ball past goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi. The goal was reminiscent of Luis Suarez's handball against Ghana in 2010, though this Suarez—a different player for Sporting CP—contributed to the assist.
Colombia, runners-up in the 2024 Copa America to Argentina, now face Switzerland in the last 16.
