Japan PM Takaichi Lands in India: Indo-Pacific Partnership Takes Centre Stage

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for her first official visit to India, signalling a deepening of bilateral ties amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region. The two-day visit, which began on July 1, 2026, is expected to focus on enhancing strategic cooperation, defence partnerships, and economic collaboration.

Prime Minister Takaichi, who assumed office in late 2025, is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising ministers and business leaders. She is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, with discussions expected to cover regional security, maritime cooperation, and supply chain resilience. The visit comes at a time when both nations are seeking to counterbalance China's growing influence in the region.

India and Japan are founding members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), along with Australia and the United States. The Quad has emerged as a key platform for promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific. Analysts say Takaichi's visit underscores Japan's commitment to deepening its partnership with India, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development and technology transfer.

One of the key announcements expected during the visit is the signing of a memorandum of understanding on semiconductor supply chains, which would allow Japan to invest in India's electronics manufacturing sector. Additionally, both sides are likely to discuss the early completion of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor, a flagship project that has faced delays due to land acquisition issues.

On the defence front, India and Japan have conducted regular joint military exercises, including the bilateral 'Dharma Guardian' and the multilateral 'Malabar' exercises. The two countries are also in talks for a bilateral logistics support agreement, which would allow their forces to use each other's bases for refuelling and maintenance.

Prime Minister Takaichi is also expected to address the Indian business community and invite Japanese companies to invest in India's manufacturing sector under the 'Make in India' initiative. Japan is already one of India's largest foreign investors, with cumulative investments exceeding $36 billion.

The visit is being closely watched by other regional powers. China has expressed concern over the strengthening of the Quad and has called for 'exclusive' regional arrangements. However, Indian officials have maintained that the Quad is not aimed at any country but is focused on maintaining a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific.

In a statement before her departure, Prime Minister Takaichi said, 'India is a key partner in our vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific. I look forward to fruitful discussions with Prime Minister Modi to take our strategic partnership to new heights.'

The visit also coincides with the implementation of several new rules in India, including changes to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime and updates to the digital personal data protection law. However, the focus remains on the diplomatic engagement between the two leaders.

Observers note that Takaichi's visit is part of a broader effort by Japan to strengthen ties with like-minded democracies in the region. As the world watches, the outcome of this visit could have significant implications for the balance of power in Asia.
