Jana Nayagan Is 50% Remake of Telugu Film, Director Confirms

Director H Vinoth has confirmed that the upcoming Tamil film Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay, is a remake of the Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari. However, he stated that only about 50 percent of the original film remains in the version audiences will see.

In an interview, Vinoth explained that the script was reworked to suit Vijay's screen persona and the sensibilities of Tamil audiences. He made it clear that the first half retains about 60 percent of the original, while the second half keeps only 20 percent, with the rest being new material.

Vinoth revealed that the idea to remake Bhagavanth Kesari came from Vijay's manager, Jagadish. Though Vinoth had earlier remade the Hindi film Pink as Nerkonda Paarvai with Ajith Kumar, he was initially hesitant. He eventually agreed, seeing it as his last opportunity to work with Vijay before the actor's full-time entry into politics.

Discussing the challenges of adaptation, Vinoth noted fundamental differences between the lead actors of the original and the remake. He said that Nandamuri Balakrishna's on-screen persona is treated with near-divine reverence in Telugu cinema, while Vijay's universe has more defined limits. This required significant changes to the story.

Vinoth also highlighted differences between Telugu and Tamil commercial cinema. He observed that Telugu audiences prioritise entertainment and are less strict about logical consistency, whereas Tamil sensibilities demand more grounded storytelling. Despite these differences, he was careful not to spoil the core of the original film.

Vijay, according to Vinoth, was deeply invested in the decision to remake Bhagavanth Kesari. When Vinoth questioned the need for a remake, Vijay explained scene by scene why he liked the film. Vinoth drew a parallel to his experience with Ajith on Nerkonda Paarvai, noting that both stars share a strong commitment to women's empowerment, a theme central to the story.

Bhagavanth Kesari, directed by Anil Ravipudi and starring Nandamuri Balakrishna, was released in October 2023 and was a commercial success. The film follows a father who goes to extraordinary lengths to protect his adopted daughter.

Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani, is scheduled for worldwide release on July 23.
