Jamshedpur Man Dies After Being Dragged from Police Van and Stabbed; Four Cops Suspended

Jamshedpur, Jharkhand: A 27-year-old man died after being allegedly dragged out of a police patrol vehicle and stabbed during a brawl outside a bar in the Bistupur area late Monday night. Four police personnel, including the officer-in-charge of Bistupur police station, have been suspended pending an inquiry, authorities said on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Himanshu Singh, a resident of the nearby Sakchi area. An FIR was lodged by his father, Arvind Singh, at the Bistupur police station. The police have arrested four individuals in connection with the murder, while efforts are on to identify and apprehend others involved.

According to the Superintendent of Police (SP) of East Singhbhum, the incident began as an altercation between two groups that escalated under the influence of alcohol. Police patrol vehicles reached the spot and detained some individuals. However, as more people gathered, the victims—Himanshu and his friend—were allegedly pulled out of the police control room (PCR) vehicle and attacked with sharp weapons.

The SP stated that the police personnel present did not take adequate measures to prevent the assault, leading to their suspension. A departmental enquiry has been initiated against them for dereliction of duty. The suspended personnel include the Bistupur police station officer-in-charge, a sub-inspector, and two constables.

The incident has triggered a political storm in the state, with opposition parties demanding a high-level investigation and stricter action against the police and the accused. The ruling party has assured a fair probe and promised that the guilty would not be spared.

Himanshu’s family and friends gathered at the hospital, demanding justice. They alleged that the police failed to protect him and instead facilitated the attack. The police have denied any complicity, saying they were outnumbered and could not control the mob.

This incident has once again raised concerns about police accountability and public safety in Jharkhand. Community leaders are calling for better training and stricter protocols for handling mob violence.

The investigation is ongoing, and the police have assured that all necessary legal steps will be taken.
