Jaishankar, Irish counterpart discuss deeper ties as Ireland takes EU presidency
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with his Irish counterpart Helen McEntee on Tuesday, conveying best wishes as Ireland assumes the presidency of the Council of the European Union. The two leaders discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade and education.
In a post on X, Jaishankar stated: 'Glad to speak to FM @HMcEntee of Ireland. Conveyed best wishes as Ireland assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Discussed deepening our cooperation, including in trade and education. Will carry forward our partnership in the multilateral domain.'
The Council of the European Union is one of the EU's main decision-making bodies. Ireland will hold the presidency from July 1 to December 31, 2026, a role that involves setting the EU's policy agenda and chairing meetings of member states.
India and Ireland have maintained diplomatic relations since 1949. The conversation aligns with India's broader efforts to strengthen ties with European nations, particularly in trade, education, and multilateral forums.
The development comes amid India's increased engagement with the European Union, with both sides seeking to enhance cooperation in areas such as digital technology, climate change, and sustainable development.
